Имперска мерна система (Великобритания)
В основата на Имперската система са положени три мерни единици, чиито стандарти се съхраняват в Лондон - ярд, фунт и галон. Понастоящем те се дефинират в отнасяне спрямо основните единици на системата SI - метър, килограм и литър. Съотношенията както следва: 1 ярд (yard) = 0,9144 m
1 фунт (pound) = 0,453 592 37 kg
1 галон (gallon) = 4,546 09 l.

22 yards = 1 chain
10 chains = 1 furlong
8 furlongs = 5280 feet =1 mile
1760 yards = 1 mile 		144 sq. inches = 1 sq. foot

640 acres = 1 sq. mile

Мерната система в САЩ
  Мерни единици в САЩ са аналогични на тези във Великобритания. В основата на системата са положени мерните единици ярд, фунт, галон и бушел. Понастоящем те се дефинират в отнасяне спрямо основните единици на системата SI - метър, килограм и литър както следва: 1 ярд (yard) = 0,9144 m 1 фунт (pound) = 0,453 592 37 kg 1 галон течен (gallon liquid) = 3,785 411 784 l 1 бушел (bushel) = 35,239 070 166 l

  Някои от мерните единици се различават от английските (UK). По-съществените раличия са следните:
- 1 тон (UK) = 2240 фунта, докато 1 тон (US) = 2000 фунта;
- за разлика от единните английските мерки за вместимост, американските са два вида
- за твърди (сухи) и течни вещества:

- International Table calorie - cal(IT);
- thermochemical calorie - cal(th);
- mean calorie - cal(mean);
- 15 degree C calorie - cal(15C);
- 20 degree C calorie - cal(20C).
За избягване на евентуални грешки е наложително да се знае кой вид калория се използва в дадения случай.
